| Thanksgiving...The Lost Holiday |
Why are we in such a rush to get to Christmas? Why can't we enjoy the holidays that are in front of us? During Halloween I was at K-Mart to get a little something for my costume and there we Christmas decorations out. This was in the middle of October!
Thanksgiving is becoming the lost holiday. There is no gift giving. No large sugar rush. No dressing up as a super hero, or a ghost, or your favorite singer. There is nothing special to this holiday.
Waking up to turn on the TV and watch large balloons, and the Rockettes in New York city and the official arrival of Santa Claus is not that special. Grandma coming over to see the grandkids, great grandkids who can't always make it to the retirement center where she lives. That's not special.
Sitting down to a beautiful meal someone has prepared for the family, that is never special.
Catching up on different family member's lives, enjoying the company, listening to a family enjoying a meal and having fun is not special. Counting your blessings during grace, listening to what others are thankful for, and having something to be grateful for is not special.
Enjoying an after dinner activity is never special, a pickup football game, playing a board game, watching Christmas specials or the football game on the TV is not special.
So, everyone enjoy this Thursday. It's nothing special, just another day on the way to Christmas. |

| Harry Potter, Christmas Trees, and various ramblings |
It's been a busy few days. Let's start with Thursday night. I took my two girls to the midnight premier of the new Harry Potter movie. It was a very good movie.

It was a good movie. The problem I had was that rearranged some things from the book. I know the book was huge and they had to do away with some of it. But they left out some major characters. One review I read said that the Lord of the Ring series showed audiences can handle a three hour movie. This one could have used that extra half hour. They had to rush through something and other things you would have been hard pressed to know what was going on in a few parts without having read the book.
My favorite book and movie of the Harry Potter series is the first one. The wonder and newness infects both the pages and the screen. I get swept away into a new world. This one I felt like I was always trying to catch up.
I got home around 3am and had to get up a little after 8 to be at work at 10:30am. What a day at work that was. Then right after work I had to go to my mother's 60th birthday dinner. My sister arranged it as a surprise. I was in a bit of a daze. I got home at midnight. I slept today until a little after 10 this morning. I usually get up between 7 and 8am during the weekends. I feel much better now.
Christmas Trees!!! There is a christmas tree event down in Akron every year. I used to go to see it when I was a kid. My girls went a couple of times when they were very small. Since Hubby had to stay at work this weekend I took the girls down to it. While it doesn't say it on the web page, the proceeds to this go to benefit a children's hospital. There are over 200 decorated trees, wreaths, miniature trees, and so on. It was beautiful. I came thiiiis close to buying a wreath decorated with nutcrackers. The only thing that stopped me was it has to stay in Akron for the length of the event. I didn't want to have to go back down to get it in a week. Plus Hubby would have had a coronary when he found out I had spent $125 on a wreath.
Tomorrow I need to start getting the house ready for the holidays. Thankfully we are not hosting Thanksgiving this year so it's not quite as imperative. Mom is hosting Thanksgiving which won't be too bad since my step kids will be with their mom. I won't have to worry about protecting them.
Oh! I forgot, I bought a new pair of jeans...2 sizes smaller than what I was wearing before I started Weight Watchers. I have lost almost 18 pounds. Considering I have also been working out I have probably lost more, but gained muscle.
That's all I can think of at the moment. Hope everyone is doing well. I'm going to go watch my recorded episode of Smallville from earlier this week. Ciao! |

| Children or (evil grin) Little Slaves? |
Ahhh fall! The crisp cool air sends me running for a tanning bed and my winter coat. It also forces all of the trees to drop all of their leaves. When I was a child I did not mind fall as much. I didn't realize how quickly winter followed. Yes, I hated winter even then. I got in trouble in 4th grade for forging a note saying I didn't have to go outside during recess. I didn't want to go out because it was cold. But, back to fall. This weekend we had to rake leaves. I have 2 huge trees, one medium tree, and several smaller trees in my yard. We try to rake twice a year, but usually we only get it done once before the snow flies. Every year we get out the rakes and the leaf blower and tarps and start hauling them to the curb to be picked up by the city. Every year we deal with the kids pooping out half way through the job and making our lives harder by jumping in our piles or having leaf fights. This year though...They are bigger! Older! And Stronger!!
Hubby did the dog area and I did around my garden and flower beds. The rest were mainly raked by the kids. We would haul them to the curb and go back for the next pile. It was great! Something that usually took all damn day was done in about 3 hours.
This isn't going to last, I know that. In a few years they will have jobs, boyfriend/girlfriends, but for now it's great being able to get them to work. Maybe not as entertaining to watch as the leaf fights, but a definite bonus.
The kids don't appreciate being called our little slaves, but they also know it won't last. Now if I could just get them to clean up after themselves in the living room or goddess forbid, their rooms, life would be pretty perfect. |

| Risk it again? |
I just love home ownership. NOT!!! Yes, you can put up a damn shelf or picture wherever you want. I don't have neighbors stomping overhead at 3am. I can plant whatever the hell I want to outside...but the rest of it sucks. The roof leaks and I'm the one up there fixing it. The furnace goes 2 weeks before Christmas and I better find the money to get it replaced.
Thanks to being the oldest daughter (no sons) to a man who was pretty handy I picked up quite a bit growing up, but there are some areas I don't like. I've already delved into my forays with electricity in this blog. The newest one is plumbing.
The toilet in the downstairs bathroom would keep running unless you jiggled the handle. No big deal in my opinion. I had no problem jiggling and waiting for the opportunity to get to Home Depot for new parts to the interior of the toilet tank. My husband decided he wanted to fix it. When he was done the toilet sported a new handle and now did not stop running when you jiggled it...you actually had to take the lid off the tank and play with the inner workings...fun! So, when I am taking off the lid after using the facilities I place it on the sink and start playing around seeing if I can figure out why it isn't working the way it should. I finally give up and go to put the lid back on the tank and one of the kids watches falls off the lid and down the sink drain. No, the stopper was not in it! Damn. I try to get it out, but it slipped all the way down to the bend. So now I have a toilet and a sink I really can't use and no time to try and take this crap apart during the week to try and fix it. I swear next time I'm going to come back as a house cat. They don't have to deal with this kind of crap! |
